How to Treat and Prevent Algae

How to Treat and Prevent Algae during Spring Opening

Warning:  when following these steps, DO NOT use your automatic vacuum as there is no option of vacuuming on waste/drain.

  1. Bring a pool water sample into Buds for water balance assistance.
  2. Remove large organic debris from the bottom of the pool with deep leaf net.
  3. Turn dial on filter to waste/drain and then using a MANUAL VACUUM ONLY, remove debris from the bottom and sides of the pool.
    • If cartridge filter doesn’t have a bypass, cartridges will need to be rinsed when loss of suction or pressure increases while vacuuming.
  4. Brush down the walls and the floor of the pool.
    • Be sure to brush areas on and around steps, ladders and corners.
  5. Top up pool with fresh water.
  6. Adjust pH to 7.2 as per instructions.
  7. Add a Solution 48 Kit to the pool, following the directions enclosed.
    • If the pool is more than 90,000L, 2 Solution 48 Kits are needed.
  8. After 48 hours, backwash the sand filter for approximately 3-5 minutes or rinse cartridges.

All dead organic matter needs to be MANUALLY VACUUMED on waste/drain after treatment.

Cartridges will need to be rinsed when loss of suction or increased pressure.

As soon as the pool clears, balance water accordingly and be sure to chemically clean your filter using Filter Cleaner.  (This will remove any remaining algae spores that backwashing/rinsing will not get rid of.)

If the water is still GREEN bring back a water sample to Buds Spas and Pools.

***ALWAYS ENSURE PUMP AND FILTER SYSTEMS RUN CONTINUOUSLY UNTIL POOL IS CLEARED***

How to Treat and Prevent Algae - Summer Maintenance

Warning:  when following these steps, DO NOT use your automatic vacuum as there is no option of vacuuming on waste/drain.

  1. Bring a pool water sample into Buds Spas and Pools for water balancing.
  2. Remove solar blanket from pool and keep it off.
  3. Remove large organic debris from the bottom of the pool with a deep leaf net.
  4. Adjust the pH to 7.2 as per kit instructions.
  5. Add a Solution 48 Kit to the pool, following the directions enclosed.
If the pool is more than 90,000L, 2 Solution 48 Kits are needed.
  6. Brush down the walls, floor of the pool, areas on and around steps, and ladders and corners.
  7. After 48 hours, backwash the sand filter for approximately 3-5 minutes or rinse cartridges.

*All dead organic matter must be MANUALLY VACUUMED on waste/drain. If cartridge filter doesn’t have a three-way valve, cartridges may need to be rinsed every 3-5 minutes due to increased pressure.

  • As soon as the pool clears, be sure to chemically clean your filter using Filter Cleaner.
  • If pool does not clear bring back a water sample.
  • If the water is clear, balance accordingly.
  • If you have a sand filter that has never been chemically cleaned and the sand is 3-5 years old, we highly recommend that you change the sand before treating for algae.

Tips after treatment

  • Solar blanket must be cleaned before it can be used on the pool again.
  • Always ensure pump and filter systems run continuously until pool is cleared.
  • Ensure that pump is running 24/7 to maintain clear water.
